DCI World Championship Finals 2026

August 8, 2026 – Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis, Indiana

I’m at my seat in section 440 of Lucas Oil Stadium, waiting for the start of the DCI World Championship final performances. The top 12 from the semi-finals will give us all one more chance to enjoy their well-rehearsed programs. The largest ensemble of the week, the INPact Band, includes over one thousand middle school students from across Indiana, and performed three pieces. Next up is a performance of the Commandant’s Own United States Marine Drum and Bugle Corps, for a traditional intro to an activity enabled by the bravery and commitment of so many Marines who protect our freedom of expression.

First to perform in the World Class competition is Blue Knights with their program “The Sky Between.” As they take the field, I recall being in Allentown when this program made me cry. I was in a particularly joyful mood, and the happy tears were activated. This corps surged to eke out Pacific Crest by only .087 out of 100 points to be here tonight. I have had the pleasure of seeing this show seven times now, enough so that it has entered my psyche. Woodwinds have made their mark this year, and the flutist with BK sets a good standard. The choice is fitting for the theme. As the angelic members fleet about the clouds, I can see clearly now how they deserved one more performance. They completed their tour this summer with a melancholy lament with a soft ending.

Next to perform is The Troopers. This corps continues to evoke the ethos of America’s corps. However, the chapter of American history portrayed in this program has a darker past, one not necessarily to be proud of. “Into Darkness” starts with narration by LBJ, notifying his fellow Americans of the escalation of the Vietnam War. Apocalypse Now is the basis of this program, with visuals and additional narration from the film. The fitting repertoire of Barber, Wagner, and Black Sabbath evokes the darkness of the senseless, decade-long war that has left an indelible stain on the American Legacy. Bravo, Troopers, for making such an important social statement to remind us of this dark past, not to be repeated; we can only hope.

Turning the dial on the Zenith takes us to another channel. A sunnier story by Spirit of Atlanta with a show titled ” Golden Summer.” This fun, bright, and cheery show depicts the golden days of a summer drum corps tour. Signs like “$$ 4 GAS”, “Not Again,” and “Free Day!” appear, portraying the unique aspects of a summer tour. Beach balls, surfboards, and beach towels depict a day off at the beach. The ballad is the perfect lament to evoke the homesick feeling of a long slog away while on tour. Thank you for bringing us out of the darkness and into the summer sun.

And then the Colts came marching in. America is still in its experimental phase. We are continuing to evolve socially and ethnically. “The American Experiment” depicts this evolution. We are not red, or blue, or black, or white. We are multi-colors and textures and patterns. The evolution from the regimental to the fluid, the traditional to the modern, is depicted by beautiful, color flags, uniform changes, drill formations, and movements that represent 21st-century drum corps. Old Glory is replaced by the New Glory as these kids make the statement that no matter what your stripe or star, we are all in it together.

The boys from Rosemont arrived on scene for one more chance to cause a stir. Wayward and trending toward delinquency, The Cavaliers presented “The Lost Boys.” Misguided testosterone was on display as this corps moves and plays with purpose, bent on making an impact. Speed, power, and panache are complemented by the occasional softer side with poignancy to display the vulnerability of the boys, not quite men. As the clock ticked down, their escapade had to come to an end and return home, but they made a final statement declaring that they were there.

Phantom Regiment has been defending its “Bloodline” all season. Starting in seventh place tonight, down from their 6th-place finish in 2025, this is the night to put it all out there. And they did that right from the start! The best performance of the season, this show rocked Lucas Oil Stadium. The response from the stands echoed the spirit of the Alumni Corps’ effect last night. Revealing the impact of the long line of Phantoms that have graced the field before them. The kids on the field exemplified the heart and soul of this legendary corps. Thankfully, even though the knives were out, no one was slain.

The Blue Stars are on display now. “Collections 26: The Galleries” takes the field with its array of props that include a mobile and large murals depicting the artistic talents of Frida Kahlo and Vincent van Gogh. This corps has risen. Elevating its artistic talent on the 1.32-acre green canvas for the entire summer. Utilizing mobile props that showcase the visual and performing arts. Tapestry in motion as the members move and play, displaying a uniform canvas. A flugelhorn introduces a Latin theme representing the influence of Latin culture in the arts of every delivery method, especially drum corps. Of course, brass is an essential element in the genre, a particular strength of this corps that has elevated this art-informed corps to the top half of the best in the world. Bravo!

Santa Clara Vanguard made one more appearance, “With Reckless Abandon.” The opening statement meant business as they stated their purpose: to cause commotion and mayhem. The fast-paced romp symbolizes the free carelessness of youth. Esprit de corps in the rectangular hood. Cymbals of a different kind embellish the theme with flair and bling. Ropes, chains, and flags whip about with vigorous precision. The ballad gives us a chance to pause and reflect, “Maybe I need to get my act together.” An uplifting feeling of transition. Maybe the lark about is over. Time to straighten up, as the corps demonstrates highly dynamic symmetrical drills with a powerful closing statement in company front at the sideline. Back to school for these former rascals, soon to be adults.

Now the hood is of a different kind. This is Boston territory, after all. After last year, BAC meant “Being A Champion.” Though not likely to retain the title, this corps is Boston Strong and Boston Proud! That is the opener in total, with clarity unbefitting of the show title, “Blurred Lines.” Sectional virtuosity is obscured by cross-purposing and mutual drill and movements intermingled. Spinning, tossing, marching, playing, and emoting together as one organism, all with the battery and hornline basting and buttering our ears. As my eyes begin to water, I think of all of the friends who have helped me get by. This includes the many folks who are family members of the Giant organization who have allowed me to hitch my wagon to theirs for ten years. This theme is a strong statement on the need to work together, no matter what section of life we belong to. We are always stronger when we work together. That is the Boston way. No better stated than when the clarinet, trumpet, and trombone belted out the Joe Cocker version of the earlier performed ballad. As the last movement begins, the lines really begin to blur. Speed, physical articulation, and powerful musicality combine behind and in front of props that cloud our vision. The closing piece brings the entire corps to the front sideline for one final chord progression as everyone in the stands leaps to their feet. Their bow, executed with a perfect wave from the middle working out to each side, was a fine gesture received by the adoring Boston fans.

“The Doors of Perception” by Carolina Crown began with classic Crown clarity. A clarity of sound and musical arrangement that we all crave. Their clarity can speak loudly, too. Imaginative use of the simple door props with patterns of far-out wavy lines accentuates the theme of perception, particularly under the influence. I am under the influence of these masters of the mouthpiece and the sticks. As the doors revolve, the guard and members keep up the pace until a divine moment intervenes. Ave Marie hits us in the pleasure button, stimulating a feeling of rejoicing and acceptance. As the entire brass pushes the final chord arrangement, the stands erupt in acknowledgment. This is not the end. Crown movements continue to grace us with the power and majesty that we know and love well. The final drill movements delight and hit us where we are vulnerable. I am happy for my Carolina friends who have built a great drum corps and continue to bring their beloved corps to the field each year.

Blue Devils are a determined corps. Even when they fall. Falling is the beginning of rising. There is a certain beauty in watching them soar again. Not to be outdone in any category, BD pushes all of their cylinders with power that excites and precision that is so satisfying to watch. Their trumpet focus is evident in the arrangements. This corps moves and plays constantly. The uniforms fit the theme with feathery trouser legs that accentuate the drills. The highly proficient concert baritone sets the mood for the entire brass to come to push the ballad to new Blue Devil heights. They suspend us in the air with the mellow reprise. The wings of man brought me to California, where I watch this show take flight. To have seen it so many times, it has been ingrained in me. What a privilege to see them take it to such heights. Second place may not satisfy them, so I expect to see them flirt with the sun again.

We are not done. But we will finish where I started. Going to California also provided a chance to see the Bluecoats early in the season, not knowing what they had going on. Well, I found out. And what a show: “Gravity and Grace.” I am trying not to show a bias or preference, but if I were to pick a favorite show of the year, it would be hard not to pick this one. That is because it is the one that I have had the most fun writing about. Not trying to repeat myself, I would like to refer you to my previous blogs and words. I am running out of superlatives. This show is not about rising and soaring; rather, it is about descending. Ironically, it has not fallen. Since it came out of the designers’ heads, it has been a winner.  One reason that I enjoyed it so much is that I understood the concept because the Bluecoats designer explained it. Each night of viewing the show, I enjoyed how each movement included some form of gravitational pull on the field toward us in the stands, as if the backfield was on top and the front sideline was the bottom. Well, anyway, the pajama-clad corps showed us how much fun they had performing it each night without fail. Gravity is a constant force in the universe. Bluecoats are a constant force pulling DCI in the direction of its choice, no matter how they tilt the field.

After a brief respite from the scene, I returned to my area of the stands for the retreat and scores. The corps are arrayed across the field in 20-yard blocks. It is the most unusual, yet beautiful display of 21st-century human art form. The scores are about to be announced. The suspense is at a minimum. The only unknowns are who will win the captions.
